We will give you comprehenisve instructions. But always bring a loved one to assist your recovery and take you home.
No one should be expected to drive or travel home alone. Bring someone to your surgical appointment, and have them look after you. If you do not have anyone, we can arrnage an overnight stay in hospital.
When you do go home, expect that you are recovering not just from surgery, but from anaesthesia as well. Rest, relax, recover.
We provide 7 days as a normal work certificate for all forms of jaw surgery. Most people need far less, and others far more time to recover. Whilst we expect your recovery will be uneventful and quick, be prepared for the worst though, and expect to be home at least a few days.
You can't expect to go jogging, head to the gym, or do heavy manual labour immediately after surgery. All of us need time to recover from surgery, regardless of how big, or how fit you are.
Multi-vitamins, high energy drinks, broths, eggs, pureed foods, and non-milk products are going to be a feature of your diet for about 10 days after any mouth or jaw surgery.
Lemon sorbet is a great way to keep your mouth cold, stops bleeding, it's milk-free, and is delicious with high energy. We highly recommend lemon sorbet.
Smoking is a no-no with big healing negatives. And alcohol can effect how you recover from anesthesia. So both are out for a few days anyway.
Cold packs are great in reducing swelling, but they can be uncomfortable too, if used excessively.
You will have cotton gauze immediately after surgery. Your wounds will all have sutures too. If you feel you are bleeding, eat sorbet, or hold crushed ice in your mouth. Wound packs rarely help bleeding unless deliberately directed by your surgeon
DO NOT RINSE your mouth. You will be provided prescripted mouth SOAKS... If you rinse, you can break your wound stitches, and that complicates surgery recovery
